Potato Surprise

The weather has been almost spring-like over the last few days with temperatures above average for late February. We made the most of the weather with a visit to Nostell Priory and had a walk around the gardens rather than the estate grounds. Ruby is not allowed into the gardens only the estate grounds.
The snowdrops planted amongst the trees are in full flower.

We have now almost finished using up the potatoes we grew last summer. They have been stored in paper sacks kept in the garage over winter to protect them from any frost. We are on our last bucket of Apache potatoes.

The only other potatoes we have left are some International Kidneys in a paper sack.
The one thing noticeable amount our remaining potatoes is that none of them are showing any signs of chitting.

We bought this year's seed potatoes from our local garden centre in early January. I always think the best place to store them is alongside our overwintering potatoes in the garage. Our newly bought seed potatoes were placed in paper sacks and left in the garage. As our eating potatoes were gradually being used I mentally made a note that there were no signs of any of them chitting. I put it down to the cold weather of January and early February.

With the arrival of some milder weather I thought I'd risk moving our seed potatoes into the greenhouse to start chitting. If any severely cold weather is forecast I'll move them into the garage for a few nights if necessary.
I was quite surprised when I took our Apache seed potatoes out of their paper sack as unlike the ones grown last year these had all started to chit. It was a good job I hadn't left them much longer because I wouldn't have been able to extract the shoots from the mesh bags they are sold in without damaging them. It's true to say that all our new seed potatoes have produced more signs of growth than the eating potatoes we have left from last summer. I can only think that it must be down to the way the seed potatoes are stored before sale. I certainly don't have any worries about the condition of potatoes.
The potatoes have all been covered with a couple of layers of fleece to keep them a little bit warmer through the night. The earliest any of them will be planted in the allotment will be the very end of March but more likely the beginning of April. We've even had good crops of potatoes planted in early May.

Not Happy with Kings Seeds

After a cold first couple of weeks at the beginning of February, it's turned much milder with the temperature reaching a very pleasant 13.8°C (56.8°F) on Saturday afternoon.

For many years now we’ve ordered the bulk of our seeds from Kings Seeds through the National Allotment Scheme.

The advantage of this scheme is that it is part of a bulk order for the allotment site and the seeds are around half of the normal selling price. With 5 allotments to fill we make a considerable saving. For as long as I can remember this scheme has worked really well but of course we’re now in Covid times.

Apparently, Kings Seeds have advised us that due to COVID restrictions seed deliveries will be delayed by up to twelve weeks. This I can understand but they are putting allotment deliveries to the back of the queue and delivering to all other customers first. That means it could be the end of February or the beginning of March before our seeds arrive. I would have thought the fairest way would be to deal with orders based on the dates Kings received the orders.

Our order was placed with Kings Seeds on 02 January and the one thing they have done very efficiently is to take our money. Kings Seeds are uncontactable by phone or email so we have no idea when our seeds might arrive.

It's now come round to the time when I want to be sowing some early carrot seeds in containers for an early crop grown in the greenhouse. I'm now having to buy seeds from our local garden centre in order to sow some early crops. Interestingly I could order all the same Kings seeds from our local garden centre today and get them delivered for free within 5 working days. I'm wondering how many of this year's seeds I will have to double buy.

From Winter Into Spring Just Like That

Our cold spell came to an abrupt end as the temperatures suddenly lifted to spring-like values over the course of a couple of days.
We made the most of the lovely weather on Monday with a visit to Nostell Priory. Despite the warm temperatures, the water in the flooded field was still iced over. You might be able to just make out visitors walking on the ice-covered water in the background. At home, our snowdrops emerged from the snow and ice reminding us that spring is on its way.
Hopefully, we've now seen an end to the worst of our winter weather although we can get some cold days in March. The latest cold spell was rather prolonged but the lowest temperatures weren't low enough to make it into my list of the top twenty coldest days. I've added a table below of our average temperature over the winter months since 2010. The table is rather large and to see it in full size, and in a readable format, you will have to click on the image.
Table of average winter temperatures 2010 - 2021
The longest spell of weather with average daily temperatures below 0°C (32°F) was in December 2010 when we had 10 consecutive days below freezing. Our latest cold spell had 6 days of below freezing temperatures in a row making it our second longest spell of cold weather. However, from the table it clear we've had much colder temperatures although for much shorter spells.

The forecast is for the remainder of February to remain closer to average temperatures bringing meteorological winter to an end as we move into spring.

Cold But By No Means A Record Breaker

It was certainly cold in the early hours of Thursday morning. Some parts of the UK had extremely low temperatures for our part of the world.

Whilst it was cold for us, as the thermometer fell to -4.8°C (23.4°F), it didn’t break any records as it just failed to make it into the top twenty coldest days I’ve recorded. It's our coldest February day since 03 February 2019 when the temperature fell to -5.2°C or 22.6°F.
Temperature Records 09-11 February 2021

It's our coldest start to February since 2012 when the average temperature, up to the 10th of the month was 0.3°C (32.5°F) compared to 2.0°C (35.6°F) this year.

The forecast is for the cold weather to continue through the weekend before some milder temperatures arrive next Monday.

Wet Start to February

After a very wet weekend, the weather has turned much colder and somewhat dryer despite the many snow showers. We haven't had any great amount of snow just enough to cover the ground.

The cold spell is forecast to continue at least until next weekend and there are some suggestions that it may continue into the following week becoming a period of prolonged cold weather. There seems to be some disagreement between the various weather models as to just how cold it might get with suggestions of -4.0°C to -12.0°C (24.8°F to 10.4°F). I'm suggesting the former will be nearer the mark as the latter will be setting a new low temperature record for my weather station.

Following on from a very wet January, February has begun very wet as well with a combination of snow and rain. On Saturday it didn’t seem to stop raining all day.
Temperature & Rainfall Records for 06 February 2021

My weather station recorded 23.8mm (0.94in) of rainfall on Saturday making it into 16th place in my list of top twenty wettest days since 2010.

We’ve already had 54.0mm (2.13in) of rainfall in the first eight days of February which is more than we might expect for the whole month. The average February rainfall over the last 12 years has been 50.6mm or 1.99in. It’s not the sort of weather that will be helping the allotment to dry out after all January’s rainfall.

Snowy Start to February Following Wettest January I’ve Recorded

January finished up wet and cold. With 85.0mm of rainfall, it’s the wettest January I’ve recorded in the last twelve years.

A decent snowfall on Tuesday morning, which turned to rain later in the day, means that February has got off to a cold, wet start continuing the same sort of weather pattern as January. The melting snow and later rainfall made Tuesday the wettest day of the year with 16.4mm (0.65in) of precipitation. At least the snow isn't hanging around.
January Temperature & Rainfall Data 2010 - 2021

I’d expect a wet January to be on the mild side but that hasn’t been the case. Only January 2010 (2.0°C/35.6°F)  finished colder than this year (3.0°C/37.4°F) and it has been the coldest month since March 2013 which had an average temperature of 2.5°C or 36.5°F.

A Snowy Start to February

February has got off to a cold start. Some winters we get away without any snow at all but this year isn't one of them. We had some more snow in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The forecast is for snow showers through the rest of the morning with the possibility of a heavier fall on Tuesday evening.
The temperature is hovering around the 0°C (32°F) mark so an immediate thaw seems unlikely.
