2013 went out on with a damp, dreary, cloudy day but it’s been a pretty good year after such a cold start through that bitterly cold spring.
It hasn't been a year for setting the hottest or coldest temperatures although it has made my record books with a gust of wind recorded at 42mph on 05 December.
The average temperature for the whole of 2013 was 9.87°C compared with 9.71°C in 2012 and 10.95°C in 2011. Rainfall was below average for the whole year with my weather station recording 522mm against an expected 650mm. It’s certainly been a much drier year than 2012 when we had 880mm.
It did look for a while, in the middle of December, that it might turn out to be one of the mildest on record. I haven’t seen any official figures but, certainly in Ossett, the second half of the month didn't perform. The average temperature finished up at 6.74°C placing it, based on Met Office records, unofficially just out of the top twenty warmest Decembers since 1772 .
Rain here all day today to start off 2014. We didn't go out at all which is unheard of. Wishing you and Sue a very happy New Year.
