A Greenhouse Surprise

Wednesday was another day with plenty of sunny spells but once again a cold blustery wind.

The sunshine made it lovely and warm in the greenhouse so I decided to pot up a few more onion sets in modules. As we've lots of sets I decided to pot them up with 3 little onions to each module. This will result in smaller onions but they should be plenty big enough for our needs.

I managed to find a little more space in the greenhouse for the onions sets so they’ll get a few weeks of warmth before they get moved out into the coldframe.

I was inspecting out nectarine, apricot and peach tree which are now growing in large pots in the greenhouse. I was looking for some nice fat green buds to indicate that the trees had come through winter unscathed. To my surprise I saw this on our apricot.
There was only one flower so pollination is going to be a bit tricky however there are more buds to open.
We’ll now need to keep a careful watch on these buds. There aren’t many insects about to do any pollinating at the minute so the flowers might need a little help to give us the best chance of apricots this summer.

    I still have about 30 onion sets left over, due to lack of space, from my autumn planting. After reading this, I checked them and they seem fine so I think I will follow your lead and plant mine up i modules later this week.

      We've had no problems starting sets off in modules. At least they can be transplanted when conditions are right.

    Exciting! If I win the Lottery I'm going to have a big old mansion with an "Orangery", in which I shall grow stone fruits!! (I live in hope, but not expectation...)

      I think that if you could afford "Willis Mansions" you'd finish up paying a head gardener to look after the estate.

      Good luck finding those Lottery Numbers.

    How lovely to see that single apricot blossom. I had an apricot in a pot a couple of years ago but it died. I'd like to get another one one day, I've heard good things about ripe apricots straight from the tree. The peach buds here are starting to swell a little, I shall go round with a paintbrush when it's time.

      Here I go again but shop bought apricots never seem to have much taste to me. They often look very tempting but are a disappointment to eat. Hopefully one day we'll have a fresh apricot to try.

      Sue will be out with her paintbrush any day now.
