There seemed to be lots of birds already in residence for a reserve that only officially opened on Monday. It couldn't be opened to the public before that because of some sort of problem of land ownership between the old National Coal Board and Leeds City Council. I understand that that has now been sorted out and RSPB have a 99year lease on the land for a peppercorn rent. We went to Steart...Great to see a new reserve open. We went to Steart Marshes back in October which is a new WWT reserve, well worth a look if you're ever in Somerset. It's a working wetland place, with saltmarsh beef and lamb being raised there, and the area is supposed to help prevent flooding elsewhere. All very fascinating, and some good birds starting to come in, although I think it probably takes a long time to settle. A bird expert we were talking to a while back was telling us that a new reserve doesn't make up for the loss of an old one.
